Affectionately known as ‘The Beast of Dufftown, Mortlach hails from the dark side of Speyside. Our distillery rests on the Eastern Coast of the Scottish Highlands. With a method unchanged over 120 years known simply as ‘The Way’, Mortlach is distilled precisely 2.81 times, with the spirit drifting through six stills with distinctively different silhouettes.
Nose: Sugary biscuits (maybe Nice biscuits), baked apple and crushed nuts. Fudge and herbal, leafy notes persist.
Palate: Rich and full of palate entry, with spicy notes of cinnamon sticks and oak. Then there’s vanilla, raisin and biscuit-y notes paired with dark jam (Jammy Dodgers?). That leafy, earthy note from the nose continues on the palate too.
Finish: Warm and drying with cinnamon, pepper and vanilla.
Overall: A top start to the new range of Mortlach single malts.
Nose: Nutty at first, followed by vibrant spices – think ginger and cinnamon – paired with fresh green apples and lemon zest. Lyle’s Golden Syrup and toffee pennies too.
Palate: The decadent syrup and caramel notes develop on the palate, with oak, earthy tobacco and almonds adding depth. Tropical fruit notes give it a lively backbone.
Finish: Citrus, mocha and more tobacco notes last.
Nose: Vanilla pods, pineapple, lemon zest and a warming hint of tobacco. Touches of crushed almond. Wafts of light oak develop and grow gloriously rich.
Palate: Dark chocolate, oak spice and dried fruits. Baking spices grow on the mid palate, building a rich core alongside the fragrant oak. Subtly herbal further on.
Finish: Sweet, drying notes, highlighted by cocoa and oak spice.
